For use with the nursery rhyme
"The Queen of Hearts"

Here is another fun activity with conversation hearts.  Provide each student with the pages to make a "Queen's Hearts" addition book.  Have the students cut the pages on the dotted lines, then staple together.  The student will roll a die and count out that many conversation hearts into the first square on the page.  Then the student (or a partner) rolls the die again and places the correct number of hearts in the next square.  Add the numbers together and place the correct number of hearts for the sum in the last box.
Students can then record the actual numbers in the boxes to complete the math sentence and eat the hearts.  I also had my student replace the conversation hearts with heart stickers so that each box contained first conversation hearts, then heart stickers and the written numeral.

Cook up some valentine tarts of your own!  Cooking involves measurement and sequencing, which are two very important math concepts.  Teaching math through a real-world application gives purpose to learning.

Download the Hexagon Snowpeople paper.  Provide students with a paper and pattern blocks.
Challenge students to use the pattern blocks to cover the hexagons.
They should try to use different combinations of shapes for each hexagon.
For example:  2 trapezoids, 6 triangles, 3 paralellograms, etc.

Use the writing prompt to encourage creativity, comparison, and number concept. Students can fill in the sentence with a number(s) and an animal(s).
For example: My mitten is so big that 1 bear, 2 pigs, and 3 mice went in.
They can then illustrate the sentence.

Download, color, and cut the mitten patterns and the animals (or download the already colored version).
Staple or "sew" the mitten pieces together. Retell the story and place the animals in the mitten as you do. This encourages sequencing.
