Bake gingerbread cookies! By
teaching students how to read the recipe and measure you are including so
many math concepts. In addition, you can create several different
graphs after you've all eaten the gingerbread men. You can
graph which body part each child bit into first, whether or not each
child liked the gingerbread, etc. After many years of searching
for just the right recipe, I think I've finally found it. It is
sweet enough to gain the adoration of the students without losing it's
gingerbread flavor. The recipe was found at
http://www.cpinternet.com/~sarah/rdr020.html. I've typed it
up. You can download my typed copy by clicking on the recipe
image. For my class of 20, I doubled the recipe and it was enough,
but next time I will triple it so that they can be thicker and I can
make a few extras.

Make holiday images with
pattern blocks. I used the online interactive pattern blocks to
create some basic workmats for my students. The mats are NOT
done to size, so students cannot place blocks over the mat, but must
look at the image and recreate it separately. This is a much
harder skill! Challenge your students to create their own images
as well! I've included the Christmas tree (pictured above), a
stocking, and Rudolph in this collection of downloadable mats for you.

Help students develop concepts such as number words,
number concepts, color words, initial sounds, and left to right, top to
bottom direction with these independent literacy jobs. Print on
cardstock, laminate, cut out, and go! These take up a lot of ink,
but are worth it if you keep them from year to year! |

Cut out 10 - 20 Christmas tree patterns. On each tree, write a number from 1 -
20. Students must read the number word and place the correct
number of presents (blocks or cubes) under the tree. To make this self-checking,
you can write the correct number of dots on the back.
